After working on Turm for a while, I collected enough experiences to judge PHP from my subjective point of view. Conclusion: PHP is not recommended. Neither as a web framework neither as scripting language. (details) As it seems PHP gained it’s popularity in historic moments. It is suitable to get things done quick and dirty, but it fails when it comes to a large project where it has to be a stable building block. Turm will be re-implemented in Ruby, .. will take some time tho.

Little crash

Last week R2 crashed. The motherboard started to do weird things, and then stopped working completely. It took down the root file system as well as the backup file system. Things are back up, with the latest software versions.

The first instance of my php-engine got a name! Turm, the unix remote manager.
It is not the most precise name, since it targets linux systems, and optionally with freesshd even Windows computers, but the term control tower seems to be appropriate.

Updates everywhere!

There were tons of updates and they keep on coming!

First of all, the hardware update is now complete on R2. It took quite a long time tho ..
Western Digital‘s Caviar Green disks are not as good as how we are used to from this company. I think I never had to send back so many disks at all. However, finally all disks seem to be fully operational.
That makes now over 16TB Disk capacity in our server, i7 processor 8 core’s, 12GB ram. Software updates are also part of our work, so WordPress, and all the other major pieces have updates too.

And I’m also updating my home infrastructure. Setting up a DAW-system, with tons of hardware, and Linux software, like Ardour, and side by side with digital audio editing, video-editing, image processing capabilities get also extended. My primary workstation is now dedicated almost completely to software development. I work on my own PHP engine at the moment, with the first project dealing with LXC containers. let’s hope we can switch to an LXC-based hosting as soon as possible, that would be the next milestone in the development in the LAB.

Updates

There are several new features built in to our system in The LAB.

First of all, we are now part of PKI, the Public Key Infrastructure. StartSSL authenticated D250 Laboratories, and the SSL keys are successfully built in to all our services, that need encryptions.

There are also news from our internal site, the forum and the wiki have now facebook-connect authentication built in, for easy login.

And last but not least, we got involved to the development of ISPConfig. Several new features are implemented, such as password-less ssh login, or signing CA certificates by a local custom CA.
these features are uploaded into the SVN trunk of ISPconfig 3, and hopefully should be included in the next update.

This relative aggressive classic techno track has already proven it’s functionality in the Mono-Club.

OFP-archives

Original games do not fade.

And thats true especially for Operation Flashpoint, the first game from Bohemia Interactive.
The OFP-times seem to have ended for me, although, I enjoy joining IRON’s XR server from time to time.
